Dr. Ralph Abernathy was a World War II veteran and minister who was a co-founder of both the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). As a result of being close friends, Dr. Abernathy was involved with all of the campaigns and protests led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Following Dr. King’s murder, Dr. Abernathy continued to lead campaigns and protests until he returned to preaching in 1977.
