Morgan was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a Greyhound bus in Virginia. She pled guilty to resisting arrest but successfully appealed her conviction for violating Jim Crow laws with the assistance of Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP. Her case inspired Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) to test the court’s ruling with the launch of the Freedom Rides. Morgan went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree at the age of 68 and her Master’s at the age of 72.
